This mom of four learned to code and changed her career path

At that time, you know, it was I was told that my having a baby at that time, you know, no, you know, like, bad timing. I would agree with that based on most of the moms who code who I’ve met. Don’t write someone off because they need flexibility or because they have a gap in their resume. Find out if they can do the job, if they learn quickly, and are up for the challenge. There are a ton of moms out there learning to code. Reach out, find out how you can get that support. I’m part of a slack channel of moms in Flatiron School and one for moms who code that I met through social media.

And I remember one time Time I always had an answer. And I think that’s kind of just, you know, that’s followed me into adulthood. Like, I love to learn about everything, take everything in and I’ve always been passionate about, you know, finding an answer and research. So I think that, you know, in everything I do, there’s always this component of having that really strong research background and that passion for just really, really wanting to know more about everything. When the kids are in school, that’s much easier. I try to be up two hours before they are to start getting things done.

Can you tell us what learning programming at Flatiron School was like and do you have any tips for bootcamp students?

She gave birth just a few months before the boot camp ended and only missed one class — a testament to her unfailing determination. Melissa became interested in coding just a few months before enrolling in the boot camp. She took some free online coding courses and then started researching boot camps, which is how she discovered UT Austin Boot Camps.

I joined PayPal when my oldest was finishing 4th grade and youngest was finishing 2nd grade. The decision to work for PayPal was big because the distance between my home and the office is far and it’s a long commute.

What Why, why do we have this thing called stem Does this fall in the education system? You know, why is this become an initiative, etc. So I went to, I went to the community college, and I sat down next to inmates. And I took the I remember that, like, because it was so like, surreal to me. Um, and, you know, they were they had, you know, they’re, you know, the orange suits on.
